"It's very important to be clear from the start"
When spending time on a project, that is especially challenging, up-to-date information from the client is essential. Additional fees should always be put into account.
Contracts are a very good way to communicate and give an understanding to the client what you offer, the costs and the time as well as effort that comes with it. You and the client, both have to be on the same page. Sharing the same vision is great for a clients relationship, showing off your work to them, explain your ideas and values. extra sketches show more and give them plenty of clear options to work from which eliminates them wasting time on miscommunication of your vision.
The Red Flags
Bad clients are all out there so you as a creative need to understand and consider whether a company you could be working for is worth while and something you want to pursue. When you feel a business/company has 'personally' the wrong morals or values to how you want put yourself out there for is up to you whether you take the job or not. And you have to be careful when clients are unwilling to pay a portion of the overall fee in advance(like a deposit in other words) for your services.
They need to be cooperative and don't leave you feeling anxious.
